What is Krav Maga?
History
Krav Maga, which is translated from Hebrew as “Contact Combat,” is a self-defense system that was invented in the 1930’s by Imi Lichtenfeld, a Hungarian-born citizen of Slovakia. This system was formed because of fascist gangs attacking the Jewish population in Germany and the surrounding European nations, prior to World War II.
Imi developed a system of defense, in which he concentrated on the fundamentals of wrestling and boxing to help others survive life-threatening encounters and attacks. His system used a person’s normal and natural movements and reactions, to defend and attack simultaneously.
Growth
Krav Maga, like most other martial arts, always encourage their practitioners to avoid physical confrontation and display de-escalation techniques. However, if confrontation is unavoidable, Krav Maga teaches you to finish a fight as quickly and aggressively as possible, concentrating on the most vulnerable and sensitive portions of the body.
Modern Day
Modern Krav Maga has implemented the aspect of karate, judo, jiu jitsu, wrestling and boxing to round out the defense system. Krav Maga has been used by the IDF (Israeli Defense Force) since 1948 as the primary combatives and self-defense system of its members. Other special forces units and security forces around the world also incorporate aspects of Krav Maga into the self-defense portion of their training.
Krav Maga can be learned by anyone and can be retained easily because of the simplicity of its application. Summed up- be quick, be decisive, and be aggressive in the face of an unavoidable confrontation…
